Sunday River’s South Ridge park will be loaded with elements for a jib jamboree open to snowboarders and freeskiers alike (Sunday River photo).Just because New England resorts transform themselves into winter beach parties during March and April doesn’t mean riders suddenly stop throwing down. There’s no better venue, in fact, than a sun-drenched East Coast stage for hosting progression camps, contests and pro appearances, each giving riders the chance to meet new friends, learn new tricks and show them off in style.
So, before you retire your snowboard for a seat at the outdoor bar, check out this sampling of springtime events being hosted at some of your favorite New England resorts.
Jib Jamboree, Jib Academy
Sunday River is hosting a pair of jib contests that are open to freeskiers and snowboarders. On March 20, the night-time Jib Jamboree is open to skiers and riders who will compete on more than 30 elements set up in the South Ridge park. Registration is $20.
On March 21, the Salomon Jib Academy will give young athletes the chance to ski with Salomon pros. Check the Sunday River website for registration information.
Kelly Clark Autograph Session
Two-time Olympic medalist Kelly Clark will return to her home resort, Mount Snow, to meet with her fans, sign autographs and more than likely take a few spins in the pipe. Clark will host her gathering on the deck of Carinthia on March 21.
Ross Powers Snowboard Camp
The 2002 Olympic gold medalist and legend in the sport will be joined by his posse of pro riders at Okemo Mountain Resort from March 22-24. Powers, Okemo’s snowboard ambassador, hosts the camp each year to raise money for his Ross Powers Foundation, a non-profit organization helping athletes with financial need.
The three-day camp is designed for intermediate and advanced riders who are able to handle fast-paced training and riding from an elite group of coaches, including AASI National Team riders. Powers is sure to lead participants over a lot of ground, including the Ross Powers Superpipe, as well as through Okemo’s six terrain parks.
“Okemo always has had a good program,” Powers said of his home mountain. “If you were ranked in the snowboarding standings, you went there. In many ways, it has always been a part of my snowboarding career.”
Participants in the camp will be grouped according to their ability and goals. Riders will rotate through the various groups to enhance the level of personalization coaches. Cost of the camp is $499.
Back to the Boneyard II
Waterville Valley once again hosts this annual event on March 23. Back to the Boneyard is a reunion and fundraiser for the Pat Moore Foundation, which helps young snowboarders reach their goals.
Last year, more than 20 teams of three divvied up their shredding responsibilities among three separate Boneyard sections that included rails, a hip and a 3-foot jump. Entry fee for this event is $25.
K-Town Showdown
On April 3, Killington hosts the Final K-Town Showdown, a series of four rail jams that feature the talents of skiers and snowboarders of all ages.
Competitors have been earning points throughout the series in hopes of walking away with 2010/11 Unlimited Season Passes. The event isn’t just a showcase for athletes but for videographers as well, as the best two-minute videos will be judged.
Pre-registration has already begun for the event. Cost is $10 for the Grom division (under 16) and $20 in the Open division.
